English Essay-01|あなたは英語を使って何をしたいのか

CEFR B2(中上級)  |  British English  |  800 words

English Is Not the GoalWhat Do You Want to Do with It?

The Question Behind the Goal

When clients tell me, ‘I want to improve my English,’ I first answer gently, and then I become inconvenient. Improve it for what?

To negotiate with overseas partners, welcome foreign customers, study a specialist subject, travel without depending on others, enjoy novels, or speak with a child’s international friends?

‘Better English’ sounds like a goal, but it is only a direction of movement.

Unless you decide where the language must take you, every textbook looks necessary, every weakness feels urgent, and progress becomes impossible to judge.

English Is a Tool, Not a Trophy

Japan’s national curriculum describes foreign-language education in terms of understanding, expressing, and exchanging information and ideas through listening, reading, speaking, and writing.

That is an important correction to a common misunderstanding: English is not a collection of points to own.

A test score can open a university door, satisfy an employer, or measure improvement, so I do not dismiss it.

However, a score is a useful instrument only when connected to a real decision. Without that connection, learners may spend years polishing abilities they rarely use while neglecting the situations that actually matter.

Meet Your Future English-Speaking Self

Motivation becomes stronger when the future is concrete.

Research on second-language motivation emphasises the image learners hold of themselves as future users of the language. Do not picture ‘fluent me’. Picture a scene. You are explaining a design choice in a video meeting.

You are asking a doctor abroad a precise question. You are reading research before it is translated. You are showing a visitor around your home town.

Notice who is there, what must be understood, and what would count as success. A visible future self gives emotional meaning to grammar drills that otherwise feel mechanical.

Purpose Changes the Curriculum

Once the scene is clear, your study plan should become narrower.

A nurse preparing for international patients needs careful listening, reassuring phrases, and vocabulary for symptoms. An engineer joining global projects needs concise explanations, clarification strategies, and the ability to read technical documents. A traveller may need speed, repair phrases, numbers, directions, and confidence with imperfect sentences.

These learners should not follow identical programmes. Purpose tells you which skills deserve depth, which can remain basic, and which can wait.

Serious learning requires selection. Refusing unnecessary material is not laziness; it is disciplined resource management.

Turn the Dream into Observable Tasks

A purpose must be translated into actions you can practise and evaluate.

Goal-setting research shows the value of clear, challenging goals supported by feedback. Replace ‘I will speak English confidently’ with ‘By September, I will give a five-minute product explanation, answer three predictable questions, and recover when I do not understand.’ Replace ‘I want English for travel’ with ‘I will book a room by phone, explain a food allergy, and ask for help after missing a train.’

These tasks reveal the vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and listening patterns you truly need. They also make progress visible before fluency arrives.

Make Purpose Enter the Calendar

Purpose must also enter your calendar.

If the future task is a presentation, your week cannot consist entirely of vocabulary apps. If it is reading research, conversation practice alone is insufficient.

Allocate time according to the performance you want: input, rehearsal, feedback, revision, and repeated use.

Keep a record of completed tasks, not only hours studied. Ten minutes spent correcting one explanation may be more valuable than an unfocused hour.

Every month, test yourself in a realistic simulation and ask three questions: What can I now do? Where did communication break down? What is the next smallest useful improvement?

A goal that does not change your weekly behaviour is not yet a working goal; it is only a wish expressed in respectable language.

Use English Before You Feel Ready

Many Japanese learners postpone real use until they feel qualified. That day is delayed because use itself is part of learning.

In the 2023 financial year, JASSO reported that 89,179 Japanese students began studying abroad, but crossing a border is only one form of contact.

You can interview an overseas professional online, write a short review, join an international community, guide a visitor, read workplace documents, or explain your hobby on video.

Begin with low-risk situations. Then review what failed: vocabulary, speed, anxiety, listening, or structure. Real use converts vague insecurity into specific training data.

Ask the Question Again

Your first purpose does not have to be perfect or permanent. A learner may begin for promotion, continue for friendship, and later use English to change careers or contribute to a community.

What matters is that the purpose is presently honest.

Motivation research based on self-determination theory suggests that more autonomous reasons support stronger engagement than pressure alone. ‘I should study because everyone says English is necessary’ is weak fuel. ‘I want access to this work, these people, and this version of my life’ is different.

So I will ask you once more, with kindness and seriousness: what do you want to do with English?

Your answer should decide what you study tomorrow.

the first time.
