Why the First Page of a New Notebook Is Always So Neat
Introduction
When we open a new notebook, we become a slightly more serious version of ourselves.
There is something special about a clean, empty page. We sit up straighter and choose our pen more carefully than usual. It feels as if the first page will represent everything that comes after it.
A Small Promise on the First Page

We write the date neatly in the top corner. We make the title a little larger and try to leave equal spaces between the words. Even our handwriting looks better than usual.
“This time, I will keep everything organised,” we tell ourselves.
We will write down our plans clearly. We will record good ideas before we forget them. We will create a notebook that we can read again without feeling embarrassed.
At that moment, we have great trust in our future selves.
However, this promise does not usually last very long.
On page 2, the writing begins to lean slightly. On page 3, a hurried arrow appears. By page 4, a quick note has escaped from the lines and found its way into the corner.
Soon, shopping lists, unfinished ideas and strange numbers written during telephone calls are all living together.
The beautiful notebook has become a rather noisy place.
When Messy Writing Becomes Part of Life
But is this really a failure?
If a notebook stayed as neat as its first page until the end, it would probably be a notebook that nobody had really used.
Its writing might be beautiful. There might be no mistakes, crossed-out words or signs of hurry. It would be lovely to look at, but there would be little room for real life.
A well-used notebook holds part of its owner’s time.
The writing from a busy day may lean forwards. A page from a difficult day may have several words rubbed out. Important sentences have lines under them, and cancelled plans have large crosses through them.
Perhaps one corner is folded. There may be a small tea stain. There may even be a page that the owner no longer understands.
It may not be perfectly neat, but it is alive.
The Person We Hoped to Be
When we buy a new notebook, perhaps we are not only buying paper.
We are buying a picture of the person we hope to become: someone who lives carefully, remembers every plan and keeps every thought in the right place.
We are buying a small future in which nothing has gone wrong yet.
That is why the writing on the first page is so neat.
Of course, life does not continue as planned. Plans change, ideas become mixed, and our handwriting slowly becomes less careful. But this does not make the first promise meaningless.
The first page shows the person we hoped to be.
The later pages show the person who actually lived.
Both are real.
So let us continue to write carefully on the first page of every new notebook. It does not matter if the careful writing lasts for only 3 pages. It does not matter if the words begin to lean on page 4 or if a shopping list appears in the margin.
A notebook that did not stay perfect is not a failed notebook.
Little by little, it has simply learnt how to fit into its owner’s life.
