Episode 06The Keep

On Tuesday evening, Daniel sat at his kitchen table and typed Albion Gate into The Keep's online catalogue.

Most of the results were not what he had hoped for. There were plans for repairs to the school building, governors' minutes and old accounts. An entry that appeared to contain pupil records was marked as restricted.

He moved down the screen and stopped at the seventh result.

Local history teaching papers and display material, 1973–1977.

The description said that these were mixed papers found in an old classroom cupboard. They included material associated with M. Ellison.

It was not Margaret's private collection. It did not sound like a complete record of her research. Even so, it was the first time he had seen her name anywhere beyond the blue book.

Daniel registered for a reader account and booked a seat for Saturday. Then he ordered that file, the school magazine from the same period and a volume of governors' minutes.

His finger rested over Confirm order.

Lesson preparation had never required anything quite so formal.

He pressed the button.

On Saturday morning, the train from Brighton to Falmer carried students and a family discussing football. Daniel put a hand into the pocket of his old waxed jacket and checked once more that the grey notebook was in his bag.

The air at Falmer felt colder than it had in central Brighton. He walked from the station and through the short tunnel. The Keep did not look like the stone archive he had vaguely imagined. A building did not need to be old simply because it held old paper. This was obvious, but it still surprised him.

At Reception, he showed a photographic ID and a document with his address. He received his reader's card and put his coat and bag in a locker. He could take only his grey notebook, a pencil and his phone into the Reading Room.

Without a pen, he felt slightly like a pupil waiting for an exam.

Inside, even the movement of paper seemed loud. Daniel sat at the desk he had been given and placed his pencil near the edge. At school, he asked for quiet several times a day. Here, nobody needed to ask.

The governors' minutes arrived first. They contained long discussions of a leaking roof, the heating and a fence around the playground. Margaret's name did not appear in the pages from the spring of 1974.

The school magazine reported sports-day results, a choir performance and a short thank-you to a retiring dinner lady. It did not contain what he was looking for either.

Daniel felt a little relieved and a little disappointed. Finding nothing was normal. He was still sensible enough to remember that.

The third item came in a thin grey folder. Its cover said only: Local Studies — Working Papers, 1973–1977.

The contents were not a carefully arranged research notebook.

There were duplicated worksheets, newspaper cuttings, maps of Brighton and Shoreham, sheets listing only book titles, and pieces of card that seemed to have been headings from a pupil display. Material from different years appeared to have been gathered together later.

The second sheet was a folded programme.

Albion Gate Local History Week — Spring 1974.

Beneath the title, Miss M. Ellison was named as the teacher responsible.

Daniel opened his notebook at once, then stopped. Her name on one sheet did not mean that she had written everything in the folder.

He wrote only: Miss M. Ellison — linked to project.

Several pages later, he found a simple map of Charles II's escape. A line came south from Worcester, turned again and again, and finally reached the coast. Near Shoreham, somebody had added a small question mark in pencil.

The hand looked like the writing in the margins of the blue book. The letters were narrow and lightly made.

But the book was back at school. He could not decide that the handwriting matched simply because he remembered it that way.

Possibly same hand, he wrote. He did not underline possibly.

After the map came several small slips listing sources and page numbers. Most used short forms that meant nothing to Daniel. One named Gunter, with later wording? written beside it.

Whoever had made these notes was not simply searching for an error in one book.

They seemed to be comparing what happened to the same event as it moved from one piece of writing to another.

At least, that was how it looked.

Daniel returned each sheet to its place, careful not to change the order. Near the back, he found a small lined card. The top half listed place names for a lesson. On the lower half, one sentence had been added in the same narrow pencil.

Worcester — check original / later transcript.

Daniel read it twice.

He did not know what original meant. A record made at the time? The first printed account? Nor did he know who had produced the later transcript.

It was not an answer. It only gave him more things to check.

Yet for the first time, the question in the margin had a place attached to it.

At quarter to one, it was time to return the documents. Daniel copied the words from the card and the catalogue number of the folder into his notebook. Then he put down his pencil.

He still did not know why Margaret had resigned in 1978. He had not proved that she wrote in the blue book. What he had found at The Keep was not the complete archive of a single researcher. It was only a group of paper fragments left inside the work of a school.

But those fragments showed that somebody had tried to follow the question back to Worcester.

At Falmer station, Daniel sat on a bench and opened the grey notebook while he waited for the train home.

Until now, Worcester had been the name of the place where Charles lost a battle.

It looked different on the page now.

Less like a subject heading, and more like a direction.

Local history teaching papers and display material, 1973–1977.

Confirm order

The Keep

Reading Room

Albion Gate Local History Week — Spring 1974.

彼は、Miss M. Ellison — linked to project とだけ記した。

Shoreham

Worcester — check original / later transcript.

Original

Margaret
The Keep
